Less than Six decades after a shaken world vowed, “Never Again,” the crime of genocide remains a canker on the human soul. Tens of thousands died in the Balkans and in Rwanda because they were an annoyance to the people in power. Now thousands are being killed, raped and brutalized in the Sudan province of Darfur, in mayhem that former Secretary os State Colin Powell has declared a “genocide.”
President Bush has promised that the systematic murders will not be allowed to continue. “Not on my watch.” Yet the United States, distracted by its war on terror and in Iraq, has not shown the will to intervene. It is estimated nearly a half million people have been killed in Darfur by roving militias –called the Janjaweed—with the support of the Sudanese government Several relief agencies have expressed grave concern that further genocide will continue when the African troops pull out.
