Nothing But Nets Campaign
An unusual partnership with The People of The United Methodist Church, NBA Cares, Sports Illustrated and the UN Foundation has taken place with the launch of “Nothing But Nets” Campaign. The effort got started when Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly learned about the UN Foundation’s efforts to provide bed nets across Africa and decided to get involved.
In a column entitled “Nothing But Nets” he made an appeal for anyone who ever played or enjoyed any sport involving nets to donate $10 – the approximate cost to purchase and distribute an insecticide-treated bed net. Malaria is a preventable disease and kills one African child every 30 seconds. One million die each year. And so, 17,000 people gave 1.2 million for 100,000 nets. Treated bed nets can prevent malaria. The UMC is part of “Nothing But Nets” and therefore a natural partner with this effort by a columnist, who sends a message to the People of The United Methodist Church. |
