MARYSVILLE UMC Five Languages of Love From Pastors Art and Carolee Catterall Did you ever think you were speaking a different language than those around you? When my kids were growing up I sometimes asked them, “Has one of us suddenly started being bi-lingual and is there some misunderstanding happening?” On January 23rd Marysville UMC began a 6-week course called the Five Languages of Love. This study involves communication and how to read others’ unspoken languages, especially those close to us. Meetings began January 23 at 11:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. for six weeks.

ALDERSGATE UMC Chico Gives $10 for Mission On January 14, Aldersgate UMC-Chico took a special offering for “Give 10 For Mission”. The “Give 10” program began with the idea that if every member of all the Shasta District congregations gave just $10, the funds could be used in much-needed, under-funded areas of our district. This will provide much-needed funding for Shasta Camp to help build a multi-use lodge, and McKinleyville Church of the Joyful Healer. McKinleyville UMC’s pastor is the former pastor of Aldersgate, Rod Brayfindley.

TRINITY UMC –COLUSA Missions & Outreach The Missions & Outreach Committee of Trinity Church in Colusa collected several boxes of non-perishable items for the annual Christmas Basket giveaway in December. Several church members also helped with packing and distributing the boxes. Coats were collected for the annual Coat Drive and toys were collected for distribution at Christmastime. The Committee will continue to collect non-perishable food for the community food closet. Another ongoing service project generated from “40 Days of Community” was collecting toiletries for patients admitted to the hospital. Boxes will be available in the Narthex for these ongoing collections.

PARADISE UMC The Values of Recycling Beginning in 1986 one of the goals of the Church and Society Commission at Paradise UMC was to raise the awareness of our congregation to the values of recycling: conseervation of natural resources, reducing manufacturing pollutants and delaying the need for additional landfills. The bonus was soon discovered – some of the recyclables could be sold! What was “trash” could be turned into “cash” to support worthy causes. Over the past 20 years this ongoing project has earned over $47,000 for worthy causes and kept untold amounts of recyclables from the landfill. For the first 14 years of the project many faithful workers collected recyclables on our back parking lot several times a month and delivered many tons of items to recycling centers. From 200 to the present time individuals deliver their own items to the Waste Management Buy-back Center and credit the Paradise UMC accounts. In 2006 recycling funds were donated to Help 4 People, Oroville rescue Mission, Parent Education Network, and Californians Against Waste. Questions??? Call Lorraine Hawkins at 530-872-0358

CRESCENT CITY UMC Outreach Response Crescent City UMC asked, “How often in the life of a pastor does one respond to a need and never see any results? Pastor Carol Layton had a lovely response to her gift from her discretionary fund, which is supplied by generous members and friends of this congregation. A family of three asked for help. They were sleeping in their car and using their heater to keep warm, which is a safety no-no! But you have to do what you have to do. They only asked for gas, but Pastor Carol could not let them stay in their car, so she provided them with housing for five nights. From another member came food vouchers. Instead of leaving, never to be seen again, as most do, this family came to church the next Sunday and were graciously welcomed. Thanks to all who support this fund!
