LARRY HOLLON of UMCOM WRITES

“Every three seconds a child in Africa dies from hunger or disease, and those who survive often live in crushing poverty. Despite profound challenges, the church in Africa is growing."
The church offers spiritual salvation and provides critical social services/ Mozambique Bishop Joao Somane Machado speaks of it this way:

“Our role is to bring people to Christ. How do we do this? We tell the story of Jesus, of course. But we also do this by providing clean water, by offering medical care and school supplies. We do this through our actions, which say clearly, ‘You are a precious child of God and your life has value.’

Last fall we asked for your help to provide life-saving communications equipment and training to support the ministries and people of The United Methodist Church in Africa. Since then, we have raised funds to purchase equipment (computers, printers, internet access, cameras, audio recorders, ham radios and solar-powered radios); and we are finalizing plans for an historic gathering in Zimbabwe where we will provide communications training to more than 30 Christian communicators from across the continent.

But we still need your help. By making a gift today, you can ensure that all of the church leaders who need and want to participate in the training and will have the financial support to do so. Your gift will also ensure that when they return home, they will have the equipment they need to share vital information about the ministries of the church.

Each day we receive critical information through the internet, radio, television and print sources. What we take for granted is just a distant dream for many Africans….If you can support the ministry of the church in Africa, please visit our web site, to make a secure on-line gift.

In the spirit of hope for all people, Larry Hollon, General Secretary United Methodist Communications.
