THE SHASTA DISTRICT SCHOOL FOR WITNESS AND SERVICE offers a variety of courses and workshops on faith and church issues to Shasta District United Methodists. Our purpose is to enhance the spiritual life and discipleship skills of as many of our leaders and members as we can.

ALL courses of our DISTRICT SCHOOL are open to everyone.


Introduction to the Bible*
A basic course which covers how the Bible came to be, the Biblical history of Israel and the New Testament church, the historical and geographical setting of the books of the Bible, and how United Methodists view the Bible.

Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts
This class will focus on helping us to discover the spiritual gifts we have in order to better serve Christ.

Dealing with Conflict
This advanced class will explore ways of resolving conflict and misunderstandings in the church and in daily life and how to design a satisfactory solution for all parties involved.

* Indicates that when taken with exam, this course qualifies as a basic lay speaker course.

** Indicates that when taken with exam, this course qualifies as an advanced course for lay speaker certification or recertification.


An integral part of our District School is our newly developed Lay Speaker Ministry training program. A lay speaker under the direction of the pastor works in many facets of service and leadership in the ministry of the church. To become a certified lay speaker one must:

  1. Be recommended by the pastor and the Administrative Board or Charge Conference
  2. Apply on official form and be approved by the District Committee on Lay Speaking
  3. Complete the Basic Course consisting of

• Introduction to the Bible

• United Methodist History and Theology

• Introduction to Lay Leadership

• And one additional course

NOTE: Credit is given for courses passed with exam before the application process. Also, an additional course must be taken every three years for Lay Speaker recertification.
