Liz Ryder, Mission Speaker

Liz, a resident of Tahoe Vista, was born in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia with an AB in English. She married Tom Ryder, and for a time they lived in Naples, Italy. Upon returning to the U.S., Liz acquired a degree in nursing, and worked at the Shock Trauma Unit at the University of Maryland Hospital. Later, becoming interested in psychiatry, she worked as a psychiatric nurse. She earned her Masters in Health Care Education from Central Michigan University, and continued work as a psychiatric nurse specialist in a branch of the United States Department of Health working with chronically ill homeless people in Baltimore.
In 1993 when her husband retired from the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, they decided to join the Peace Corps.
Liz recently received nomination to the “Wall of Tolerance” by the national Campaign for Tolerance. She is listed in Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in America. She and Tom have two adult sons, Peter and Paul.
While serving with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, Liz was director of TESOL (the English Speaking school of Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo), and the administrator of the Kamina School of Nursing. She and Tom spent seven years in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire, and before that, Belgian Congo).
Liz has made numerous trips to West Angola to do work related to the West Angola/California-Nevada Annual Conference Partnership between the two conferences. Liz went to China earlier this year with a Volunteer In Mission (VIM) team, under the direction of J.P. McGuire, Conference VIM Coordinator.
Liz is a member of the Conference Board of Missions, and a Core Interpreter for GBGM . She was recently appointed Chair of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) for the California-Nevada Annual Conference. She is available to speak to local church groups. DARFUR's Fragile Peace Needs Church Attention
Leaders of the World Council of Churches as well as U.S. pundits are appealing for churches and the international community to safeguard the fragile peace process in Sudan, warning that “an ominous humanitarian crisis of gigantic proportion” looms if war criminals in the DARFUR region are not brought to justice soon. The WCC’s executive committee adopted a statement May 18 urging churches to press their governments to support peace efforts in Sudan. Peggy DuBose
March 25, 1933 – May 7, 2006 |
| An accident caused the death of Peggy DuBose, active layperson in Shasta District. Her death came as a real loss to those who knew her in United Methodist agencies and at California-Nevada Annual Conference. Peggy graduated from Hermitage High School near Hermitage, Arkansas. She earned her AA Degree from Sacramento Junior College and her BA from Sacramento State College. For the next thirty-eight years she taught Home Economics at Wheatland High School, Folsom High School, and Roseville High school. During her long teaching career Peggy served as a mentor and advisor to many groups and faculty committees. After retiring from teaching in June 1993, Peggy was a frequent volunteer at Marysville First UMC. For several years she was an officer in Shasta District United Methodist Women. She was a valued member of the Shasta District Committee On Ordained Ministry and gave herself tirelessly to the work of The United Methodist Church. |
