Louise Nelson with Vim To Angola

Louise Nelson, member of Chico-Trinity UMC will leave May 15 with Liz Ryder, who will head a Volunteers In Mission (VIM) trip to West Angola.
Louise says, “Angola, Africa is a contradiction. While it is one of Africa’s leading oil producers most of its people live on less than $1 a day. It gained independence from Portugal in 1975, than was embroiled in a 27-year civil war. Hundreds of thousands were killed, and the ravages of war include landscape littered with landmines, destroyed buildings, and ruined infrastructure. Reconstruction has begun and is ongoing. The village we will visit is Cabala, after flying into Luanda (Angola’s capital) on the west coast. The area is included in a partnership between the California-Nevada Annual Conference and the West Angola United Methodist Conference, to improve conditions in West Angola..
Louise Nelson, member Trinity UMC completed CROP Walk and is heading to Angola with UMVIM Team.

“Their desperate need for assistance provided me with the incentive to help, within the framework of our church. Our work is threefold: English as a Second Language (ESL), community based health care, and construction. While I am not a teacher (rather a retired RN), I feel I can help by teaching English to adults. I hope to learn a little Portuguese, or one of the Angolan’s dialects as well. I feel I can grow as a Christian by helping those less fortunate than myself, and rise to meet an important personal challenge.”

Trinity Pastors David Moss and Julie Horne co-produced a service of consecration during the worship hour on May 13 for Louise before her departure to Angola. (This ritual can be found in the United Methodist Hymnal when “sending off” Volunteers In Mission people from local churches.)
